Driving Rules - Off Road Insurance

Since March 2011 new 'continuous insurance enforcement' rules came into effect. This means that every car now needs to be insured or have a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) – even if it's off road and doesn't pay road tax.

You could apply for a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) which means that you don't need to tax or insure your vehicle. It also means you can't drive it on the road though.

The reason this has been introduced is to tackle the estimated 1.4 million vehicles that don't have insurance. Uninsured drivers push everyone's premiums up, so this is designed to reduce the burden on uninsured drivers on insurers, and policy holders.

The previous law was that a driver had to be caught driving to be prosecuted as uninsured, now you could be prosecuted just for having an uninsured vehicle.

If you don't take the necessary steps you will have received a warning Insurance Advisory Letter. Your details will have been taken from the Motor Insurance Database (You can check your cars insurance status on the MIB website) If you fail to take action and get car insurance or a SORN you could face

* A fixed penalty of £100

THEN

* Having your car clamped, taken away (impounded) or even crushed

THEN

* Court prosecution (maximum fine £1,000)

If you have had to pay fines you will still need to take action to prevent further prosecution. The fines do not replace the need to insure or SORN the car.

Driving Schools have gone online too, offering a range of courses from the basics to advanced driving courses. Such schools provide the liberty of starting and completing a driving course at our own pace, sitting at home. Certificates are usually mailed either through normal or express delivery systems.
